How to choose an overwater villa

The Maldives made overwater villas famous: a villa on stilts above the lagoon, a deck with steps into water so clear you can watch fish from the bed. Not every one is the same, though, and a few choices make the difference.

  • Pool or no pool? A private pool on the deck is the one upgrade most guests are glad they paid for, especially at midday or when the tide is low.
  • Lagoon or ocean? Lagoon-facing villas look over calm, shallow turquoise water; ocean-facing ones look out to the horizon, with deeper water below.
  • Sunrise or sunset? Decide whether your favourite hour is coffee at dawn or a drink at dusk, and ask for that side.
  • Speedboat or seaplane? Resorts near Malé are a short speedboat ride at almost any hour; further atolls mean a seaplane, which only flies in daylight.

When to go, and for how long

The dry season, roughly December to April, brings the calmest water and the clearest views from the deck, and the best water villas sell out first. Most guests stay five to seven nights, and many split the stay between a beach villa and a water villa.

Overwater villa or overwater bungalow?

They mean the same thing. "Overwater bungalow" is common in Tahiti and the Pacific; in the Maldives, resorts usually say water villa or overwater villa. Planning a honeymoon? See our guide to the best Maldives honeymoon resorts.

FAQ

Overwater villas: your questions

Do all overwater villas in the Maldives have a private pool?

No. Many resorts offer water villas both with and without a pool. If a pool matters to you, check the villa name: it usually says "with Pool" or "Pool Villa".

Are overwater villas suitable for children?

Many are, and several resorts have two-bedroom water villas for families. Some keep certain overwater villas for guests aged 12 and over, such as the Ocean Villas at Siyam World. Young children need watching on the deck and the steps.

Sunrise or sunset side: which is better?

It depends on your favourite time of day. Sunset villas are the most requested, so they often cost more and book out first. Sunrise villas are just as lovely in the morning and are often quieter.

Can you snorkel from an overwater villa?

Yes, at many resorts. At Grand Park Kodhipparu, the Reef Pool Water Villas sit on the reef edge, and at Baros the lagoon steps lead out towards the house reef.

Which overwater villas are closest to Malé airport?

On this page, SO/ Maldives and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo are about 15 minutes by speedboat, and Grand Park Kodhipparu about 20.
